A piece of history

Hi all,

Searching about the banjo phenomena in the 1900´s, I could corroborate that it happened in Colombia too. I share you a dissertation about music of the early XX here in Colombia (The author, is Colombian too). Despite it is in Spanish, you can find some pictures with Colombian banjo players!...I will let you know if I can find those banjos!.…

It is a piano  part in midi file .

And don 't forget you have to tune the bass in D ; it is a pleasant tune to play

the tempo is something like 80 ; must be speeded to play it like a cake walk , i guess

Metal or gut?

So! I bought a Greenop banjo last year (yes, "Skeleton Dance" Greenop). Almost identical to this one at ZitherBanjo.org. My question: steel or nylon strings? The several spare strings in the case were metal, and the one at the link is strung with metal. I have it strung with metal now, but I obviously want to do right by it. His patent for this design was dated 1926, so it could go either way.

1880's/1890's banjo sheet music "in da house"

I nicked a box full of crumbly old sheet music offa ebay a week or so ago. Paid about $0.80 ea with shipping. See attached list for the titles, etc.

All of this stuff is American, pre 1900 and in A notation. Amazingly, not many duplicates (whew!) for me. Sure, some obvious ones like Darkey's Awakening, On The Mill Dam, Queen of the Forest, etc. However, there are a couple of previously unknown publishers (two female!) and nearly the entire output of a previously unknown (to me) New…

Normality

Things are pretty much 'back to normal' here. Study door is shut, sounds of banjo music heard and OH only emerges for cups of tea or a meal. Something is afoot, though. How do I know? OH tends to focus on one thing at a time as you can probably tell by his time away from here. The roof took priority. Now he has another project to occupy him, which involves long periods at the computer. This project involves much hard work plus the added bonus of banjo music and,…

Similarities

Having been to 'Dancing Time at the Library' yesterday and dancing in the man's position, (because there were not enough men to go round), a thought suddenly occurred to me.

The gentleman's ballroom hold is very similar to holding the banjo.…

Supporters' Club

It helps to offload sometimes, to know that there are others in the same boat. You are not the only one who is suffering supporting your loved one. Just talking about it may help. I'd like to post today about tunes that go round and round in your head, tunes that bring back certain memories, tunes that affect other people in your lives. One tune stands out for me and that is…
