“A Southern Belle” was written by Max Eugene in 1903 and recorded by Ossman for American Records c. 1905. This is a lively, rag-time piece of the type Ossman played so well, and for which he is best remembered. It is quite a contrast to last week’s Caprice. With this (restored) recording set very near proper pitch and tempo, Vess L. breezes through the piece faultlessly, at a finger blistering 124 bpm or so. Banjo King indeed!

Have a listen to Ossman’s performance as well as the digital playback of my transcription. PDFs are available below in notation and tablature.

WOW.. He makes it sound so easy.

Oh Dear! ...  more practice needed, I am afraid...  for all of us  ;-)

Thank you Shawn, this series of "cleaned" and transcribed pieces is brilliant, and as usual the quality of the scores you have produced is amazing.

Hi Ian

Yes, Ossman is so good it's almost scarey. Even in his own time he was described as being "in a class by himself."

I've taken the time to restore the recordings so more people can hear him at his best and appreciate just how brilliant he was.

thank you very much , this makes my day and more

Steve  : Knowing you enjoyed this makes my day too.

What a great tune, and a great player.

Well done Shawn, well done.

Sorry for being daft folks but how can I play this ? Nothing comes up when I click on the link

Hi Daniel,

Very Odd!

Just click the PLAY arrow button at the end of the yellow

"Ossman Plays A SOUTHERN BELLE" bar.

It works for everyone else!

If it is not working for you, after you have checked your speakers are not muted, what are you viewing the page on (device/operating system/browser)?

..but it has been fully tested for cross browser compatibility.

Ian

Well, not exactly everyone else... ;-)

I cannot play them from here at work. There is some kind of goofy issue with either this computer or the network. The clickable 'audio' links are simply a pair of text arrows from here. They highlight when I click on them but nothing actually happens.

At home, the audio controls are covered by a grey block. I have to click on the block and then it disappears, revealing the standard audio controls...which then work perfectly.

Thanks Marc,

I will look into it.  It may be a problem with the Firefox browser.

Do you have Firefox at home or something else?  We expected a few gremlins as the hosting server recently upgraded their operating systems (to PHP 5.5) on the servers and the odd "goofer" still appears!

Here at work, we use IE 11 and Windoze 8.1...but there is a very strong (and completely daft) firewall here.

At home, I'm using Chrome and Vista. The Chief of Stuff (Miz Diane) has mandated an upgrade for later this year, so we'll get a new home PC and I'll mind-wipe the old Laptop completely, update it to Win7 and use it strictly for music stuff...back in my music cave.

same thing for me : working with Firefox and not working with IE ..... ? ?

Thanks all,

This is a tricky one!  I will get a fix as soon as I can.

Ian
