My 5th string tuning peg on my CE Imperial is really losing it's grip. I'm very reluctant to replace it with a modern one.

Does anyone have a spare one that they would like to sell? Or is there a way to fix it?

It is possible that the problem is not with the peg but with the hole. I would think the wood of the hole would wear away quicker than the shaft of the tuning peg which I presume is metal. If the hole has gotten too big,  a different peg that is identical to your present one will not hold any better. Try putting a tiny wood shaving or splinter in the hole along with the peg. That might work.

That sounds very logical. Thanks alot, Jody!
I'll look in to it today.

I have had good luck with metal friction tuners just by disassembling and cleaning them up. Some of these have friction washers that protect the wood from friction, some do not. They weren't meant to last 100yrs, so a new washer can make a big difference. Paper washers work quite well, I usually use thicker paper, such as a business card.

If it is using the peg hole as a friction source, then Jody's expedient is a decent solution. I have plugged and re-drilled the hole on occasion...but as I don't really like that style, I more often just replace them with newer Champion-style tuners (that use washers).

Thanks Marc. I'm waiting for new gut strings and will do a thorough cleaning when I change strings.

Did you ever try leather instead of paper as washers? I have lots of scrap leather laying around.

While I've found many with leather washers, I don't have any suitable leather...so I use paper. Certainly a good thin, hard leather is usable. Too soft (like suede or something) might not do well.

I use vegetable tan leather washers.  I cut them myself with some punches.

Ah. Yes. Yesterday I was pondering how to cut and then drill holes neatly in the leather...

Punching them out is of course a much better idea! :-) Thanks.
