Bit late commenting but still..

I really laughed load with surprise at this:

"To clean the vellum, use nothing but bread"

Has anyone tried this? How is it done?

Just the same as a pencil eraser. I've never done this with a banjo, but taking a clump of bread and squishing it together tightly, is an old trick for using as a pencil eraser. I can remember being shown this years ago, when I needed an eraser but didn't have one.
