American sailors to boot...

Very cool picture!

Thanks John and Joel!!

Excellent and something new on me. Any ideas when and where? I notice a Pierot playing the piano so it may be quite early.

Joe Morley performed with Alec Hurley's concert party, 'The Jesters' in the early part of the !st world War, and they were known to have entertained the armed forces in Ireland at this time. This rare photograph may show Joe Morley  'in action' with this troupe. Morley is not wearing a Pierrot costume which he would have been if he had been appearing with the Clifford Essex Royal Pierrots from whom he parted company in 1909. Had he been appearing with the 'White Coons; he would have been wearing a white suit. During the 1914-’18 World War ,ships of the American Navy used Berehaven Harbour as a base. The following is an extract from The United States Marine Corps on World War 1 by Major Edwin N. McClellan, USMC, First Printed 1920, Facsimile Reprinted 1968 Historical Branch, G-3 Division Headquarters, U.S.Marine Corp. Washington, D.C.20380.

"Marine detachments served on board all the American battleships attached to the British Grand Fleet and also on the American battleships which were based at Castletown Berehaven, Bantry Bay, Ireland. " So my guess is that Joe is with Alec Hurley's troupe, in Ireland, in this photograph.

I concur that this was taken during the Great War, but there were American sailors stationed elsewhere in Britain during 1917-18, not just in Ireland, so it could have been taken in England or Scotland.

I purchased the postcard from a seller in Boston, MA.

That is fantastic! Thanks for sharing, John.

Even so John, it still looks like very large on him, somehow I had always imagined he was a big guy, dont know why, does anybody know if JM was a smaller man ?

Richard, I am afraid I dont understand the meaning of your posting these pictures that we have all seen, they go no distance at all to answering my question, I wondered if anybody knew whether JM was a small man, I still think when compared to pictures of Vess Osman holding a 12" pot banjo that, JM either looks small or the banjo looks big.
