I have been chatting to site member Jake Schepps.

Jake is a fine musician and  bluegrass banjo player who also plays Classic Style tunes with his own interpretation and panache !

Please visit Jake's Website as he has a load of information about his performances and recordings.

Jake’s playing style reminds me of the late and great Dave Hum, also was a member of this site, who loved to play Classic Style pieces with a bluegrassy feel :-)

In the future Jake says that he would like to set up a quartet to play banjo and include a wider range of Classic Style pieces.. let's hope that he does!

Here is Jake, with Greg Schochet (archtop guitar), and Eric Thorin (bass). playing Emile Grimshaw’s  “A Footlight Favourite” like you won’t have heard it before.

I am sure that old Emile will be looking down with a smile!

Jake describes this performance as “a swing version of the tune, but certainly with a bluegrass edge”

Enjoy!

A FOOTLIGHT FAVOURITE Jake Schepps

Well...

I really like Jake's playing and his handling of the tune. The swingy bits are nicely done (and not overdone) and I like the tone/sound he is getting.

However...

I really dislike the backup guitar/bass, etc. I stopped the recording about halfway thru because I just couldn't listen to that backup for another second. Just not my cuppa tea...

I also noticed that Tony Trischka's on-line Banjo School has a small Classic Banjo section featured in the lesson list: http://artistworks.com/tony-trischka/lesson-list

This might get some more bluegrass players interested in Classic banjo.

Tony (w/Bill Evans) recorded 'Banjoland' on his 'Territory' album - worth checking out.
