Eboby banjo wedges

Whilst looking for a cheap source of ebony to make banjo wedges, I came across the following website.

They sell exotic woods for craft projects and I ordered what they list as black wood bells, it cost me just under £10 with the postage and they sent me a chunk of wood about 4"x4"x5". It was just right for the job and I've already made an fitted a couple of wedges to one of my banjos. I don't know if they ship outside the UK but this info may be of use to our British Members.

Hi Steve, I bought some off eBay to make the very same wedges! I also wanted to produce ebony dust for mixing with epoxy filling damage around MOP inlays.  That is quite a chunk. The ones I bought were 1" x 1" x 12" pieces.

If you can find a car boot sale near you, you might look out for ebony souvenirs, carved elephants etc. from before the war; you can often buy these for a couple of pounds, or less, as they seem to be out of fashion. Similarly, tortoiseshell items can often be bought for a pound or two,if you want to make yourself some plectrums/plectra

That's a good piece of lateral thinking..I'd have never thought of it..as soon as my leg is out of plaster I'll get down to our local car boot and start looking...all the best..Steve.
