Is the V a thumb strike from 4th string to 1st (a 'rasp' with back of thumb nail or just a stroke?) with the second chord played 1st to 4th.  Confused.com

Looks like an accent mark.

Oh, I'm getting confused with up/down stroke symbol for tenor/plectrum - so do you think it means play both chords 'strongly'.

Yes, it is "marcato", so it is meant to be played a little more strongly than the sideways "accent" mark >.

Great, thanks Marc - that makes sense

LOL. Before I started playing the Cello and then Viola in a string orchestra, I would have also assumed it was some sort of funky "banjoistic" marking. However, after having been chewed out by a conductor for not playing them loudly enough... ;-)

Good job I checked - I get into enough of a finger-tangle without complicating matters :)
