The good news is that it's one of them "finger or plectrum style" tunes -- interestingly, it has the 5th string indicated on the score in several places, which leads me to think it was primarily written for fingerstyle.  Here's the score:

Tab for "Jazzbo's Holiday" is available in Chris Sands' book "Tarrant Bailey Jr. Banjo Solos." Well worth the price paid (my opinion). Amazon.com has copies. Comes with a CD too.

Jazzbos holiday doesnt seem to be covered by many people. I did a search on utube and didnt find anything !

I think the only "safe" TBjr piece one could post would be "Transatlantique", as it was a gift to the American Banjo Fraternity. Neat piece too.

AFAIK, a number of TBj solos were published by Clifford Essex and BMG throughout the years, so presumably the rights holders for those would be the CE co? I've also seen an early edition of Jazzbo's Holliday bearing the inscription "Copyright G.P. Music Co.", but I have been unable to find any information on the GP Music Co.

Hope this doesnt sound too dumb but............ are you guys saying that some people are so litigious and sensitive that it prevents others covering their pieces and sharing them with others? Ian did explain a little bit to me but i didnt realize how bad it was!!

So, if i was to learn and indeed post a video of myself playing for eg Jazzbos Holiday, it could mean trouble for the forum or myself ??? So one would be wise to check the copyrights to see what is permitted ? Also, if this is the case, would it be a good idea NOT to post videos of people i like playing tunes i like on here?

Im only asking because im not familiar with these issues.

Some people are. As a rule of thumb, here's a rough guide to CB kashrut:

All music published prior to the 1920s is automatically kosher. Also, stuff written by people who died 70+ years ago can safely be considered kosher; that includes Joe Morley, Parke Hunter, Herb Ellis, and a lot of the early stuff (late 19th century).

Clifford Essex stuff is kosher. The current owners of CE are very nice and don't mind people covering the songs, but we have a gentlemen's agreement on supporting their modern publications of tabbed out solos.

John Alvey Turner stuff is kosher, the owners have given permission to distribute the Joe Morley music that was published by JAT.

Grimshaw stuff is also OK, even though copyright will still last a few years. The Grimshaw books (The Banjo and How to Play It and How to Excel on the Banjo) should not be distributed, though.

It's also OK to play the Cammeyer stuff, as far as I know. Since Cam died in '49 copyright will still last for a while, though.

Stuff by Frank Lawes is also kosher; even though it's more recent, his grandson is a member of our group and doesn't mind us performing his works.

Stuff by Fred Van Eps and Farland is also OK, as far as I know.

The rights to TBj's music belong to Chris Sands. There has been trouble over TBj stuff in the past so I'd recommend you don't post any videos and especially not any tab or notation you might have.

As a rough guideline, that's about it. I know it's silly to have to worry about playing old music that is out of the modern musical mainstream but that's copywrong for you...

Hi Julian,

Copyright is a blight on small clubs and groups. I am sure that 99.9% of hobbyists, and even professional players would not object at all to having their video performances posted. We have hundreds already. Many composers and arrangers willingly upload scores for others to play from.

When I took over the ownership of this group I wanted to share all my music and my limited skills as a player to help others learn to play. I created the MUSIC LIBRARY and LESSONS videos as a FREE resource for all to use.

Very rarely  situations arise where someone does not wish to share or freely help others and this is when even the most minor Copyright infringement can become a problem, as it did recently.

All of what Mike Moss has posted above is correct and I too would suggest that TBj or C Sands music is NOT posted. It is sad that the playing of two of the UKs greatest players is condemned to be stuck away in some cupboard until forgotten as it is not allowed to be shared.

Don't let the spectre of "Copyright" put you off though, as we always have the nuke button here if we feel posts could cause problems, even though we HATE to have to use it... Banjo music should be for everyone!

Hi Julian..Taking the plunge and starting to learn to read the dots is not as daunting as first appears. As a very competent 'ear' and tab player you should pick it up easily. Being able to read the music will just tell you what you already know but maybe didn't realize. I have a copy of 'Music theory for Dummies' which is available on Amazon. I use it as a teaching aid and although it is primarily aimed at guitar and keyboard players, it does explain very well most of what you'll need to know in an easy to digest format in plain English.
