Are there any members who currently have Skype and who would like to form a Skype forum or something similar?  For those who don't have Skype, the facility is currently free to use apart from the modest cost of a webcam (I paid £9 at Amazon for mine.) It is easy to set up and although I have a relatively slow download speed of 2mbs, it works very well.

I have Skype and so far (about 2 months) I've found it easy to use. I just use the built-in camera on my Mac. What would a Skype forum be like I wonder? I guess we'd have the advantages and disadvantages of real time.  The one problem I've encountered is there is a delay in sound and sometimes in the video as well.  So it's not possible, for instance for several (or even 2) banjo players to play at the same time on Skype because each of us would be hearing the others out of synch with our own playing. It could be highly entertaining but probably chaotic from a musical point of view.  It would be useful for showing each other how we finger certain passages, or how our right hand fingers and thumbs contact the strings.

Hi Steve, as you know I have Skype and do have the occasional lesson with Rob MacKillop. We did try a duet during the last lesson and it was a bit iffy ,   (  I could hear him ok but he couldn't hear me), and as Jody mentions there is a delay sometimes in sound and vision. However I do think it is well worth looking into, technology is improving all the time.

At the moment I have a lot going on here and things  won't quieten down until about mid June. But count me in as being interested.

Hi Jody, I know it's imperfect technology at times and issues that you raised are perfectly valid. I'm viewing this request as a more informal way for members to be able to extend friendships using Skype.

Hi Steve,

I have taken advice and the Ning site it not suitable to incorporate peer to peer communication, like Skype, so any communication between members would have to be arranged privately. Perhaps you could make a "Friend" request to people interested and then this will allow you to email them directly using the Site email. You could then arrange to speak, off group, via Skype.

Regarding Jody's and Sylvia's comments, I too have used Skype for video and  it is terrible at times. The delays would make real time musical interaction (playing together) virtually impossible. If people need specific help with techniques or fingering, couldn't these could be posted as short video clip answer on site or described in Discussions? ...  Just a thought.

I will leave the Forum feature at the top of the Main page for a while to see how you get on.

Ian
