I am very sad to report that group member Hal Allert passed away on the 20th December last year.

The news has just come through.

Hal was a great supporter of the classic banjo, founding the New Criterion Banjo Orchestra and transcribing many old cassette tapes to mp3.

He also maintained the resurce web site: http://classicbanjo.com/

Latterly Hal and I have been working on the Cammeyer project ...still work in progress.

A good friend who will sadly missed.

Oh my goodness!  Classic Banjo without Hal Allert will be a darker place.

Thanks for letting us know. I have been in regular contact with Hal so this comes as a complete shock.

Sad news indeed, but at least Hal has left us all a legacy for the future with his many arrangements that can be found in the library, he certainly won't be forgotten....Steve.

Sad news , RIP   Hal ;

we gonna follow your music ' heritage

This is indeed a loss to the classic banjo community,  In a way Hal was responsible for me finding classic banjo.  He posted a bunch of scans on his website of folios and instruction books (books from Marc Smith) before any of that stuff was available online.  It was with those books that I learned the basics of classic banjo using A notation.

It was also his early sharing that inspired me to scan and share anything classic banjo related I could get my hands on, giving universal access to it.

RIP Hal!  Thanks for enabling me.  I hope you transitioned into whatever afterlife you believe in (or not).

I'd like to add that he maintained and posted the Classic Banjo Radio streaming.  I have shaped hundreds of banjo thimbles and ran many miles on a treadmill (not at the same time) to that "station."

I wonder if there is a way we can reach out to his widow to get his digital sound files and host a similar thing on the ning site in his honor?  He had assembled a ton of great (and rare) recordings.

He will be missed!!

Joel, His wife Susan died two weeks after Hal, so it is a very dark time for the Allert family!

I just read the obituary.  They must have been inseparable.

My goodness this is a shame. I can't believe it, I just spoke with Hal a few months ago and he seemed as if all was well. Does anybody know cause of death? To echo the words of others, a banjo legacy in the classic community, he's already greatly missed.

Dow

Dow, the cause of death was a sudden cardiac arrest.  Here is an excerpt from a letter from his daughters  that arrived in the mail a few days ago.  It cuts deep. I can hardly type the words without breaking up. Here is an excerpt:

"It is with deep sorrow that we share the very sad news about the passing of both our parents, Harold (Hal) E. Allert  and Susan P. (Ciara) Allert. During their 49 years of marriage, Hal and Susan shared many adventures and good times with the people in their lives, and in doing so, created lasting friendships.

Hal passed away in his home on December 20. 2017 of a sudden cardiac arrest and felt no pain.

Susan passed away in her home on January 5. 2018 of what we can only describe as a broken heart and a longing to be with Hal once again. She passed away peacefully in her sleep, with family nearby, and she is no longer in pain."

There is going to be a memorial gathering —with banjos — ion February 24, in Spokane.

Jody, I choke up just reading it. Hal was a great guy.

Yes, I have the same letter from Jennifer, it is very sad. I have details of where dontions can be made in their memory.

Just to let everyone know, that I will be saying a few words about Hal on Saturday at the Clowne Rally prior playing a little Cammeyer snippet in his memory, just a few bars that we found together on a hand written m/s....
