A Site Dedicated to all enthusiasts of Classic Style Banjo
This is something I'm working on at the moment - it's a bit of a finger-tangler for me but I'm hoping in time I can play it more cleanly.
I haven't made a video as I've recently moved house and am surrounded by boxes. It's not a pretty sight! https://soundcloud.com/banjopickingal-1/shaeffers-jig

Sounds pretty clean to me. Wonderful performance. Great job!
I hear 3 imperfect notes out of several hundred. That's a better batting average than anything I have posted to this forum.
I aim for about four notes out of ten, some people aren't as fussy as me, you're doing well.
Thanks chaps - I appreciate the words of encouragement.
Hi, Carrie,
Sounds great to me! I'm on page 22 of "The Banjo and How to Play it," minus the CD that got bent by our local postal staff (argh). I have a Cammeyer (from about 1910), and am trying to figure everything out coming from clawhammer style. It's a whole 'nother animal! Thank you for your post!
Thank you Ginny. I am also discovering classic banjo, having stumbled across the Rob MacKillop videos on Youtube - I bought his Early Fingerstyle book and my journey began. My background is bluegrass where the skill is finding the melody notes within continuous roll patterns. Classic banjo involves fresh challenges: new techniques (triplets, grace notes), much more hopping about the fretboard, and trying to follow music scores for the first time. I am up for the challenge!
Also, you mentioned having small hands and what banjo to buy - I also have small hands and have found my Clifford Essex 'CE Special' a great little banjo with a narrow, slim neck. Most open-back banjos these days appear specifically designed for clawhammer players who seem to prefer wider fretboards with frailing scoops so a vintage banjo may be the way to go.
Ooops, I think I've sent a message via the wrong route, but I was trying to establish if Carrie used tab or notation for the tune, I have been trying to play this version for several years since hearing Ray Andrews play it (and before him, Clive Palmer) I would dearly like to find a tab for this.....Any elp members can offer would be gratefully accepted.Tom.
Hi, Carrie. I'm back after moving from Seattle to Sebastopol, California (North of San Francisco). I'm trying to figure out where my stuff is, too, and it is a big problem finding things. At least, I know where the instruments are...and some books and sheet music. Now, to find time to practice and get going, again. I've forgotten how to play "Sunflower Dance," so back to the beginning I have to go. I have been playing old time American traditional tunes, so I'm not, completely, hands-off on the banjo.
Thanks for posting the tab on Shaeffer's Jig. I will try that, too.
We are off to a gig at an assisted living place. Playing guitar and banjo for a tune or two, but we are part of a little senior band that, mostly, has singers. It's quite a little variety show, so I can get my classic banjo tunes fired up and present them if I just spend the time. Since it is Halloween eve, we are wearing a little costume, today, when we play for the senior home. One of the songs is "Ann Bolin" about her ".head tucked under her arm....." I've forgotten where you reside. Thanks a lot. Ginny:)
I hope my reply was sent. I edited it, and I'm not sure if it went.
Carrie, I want to thank you for that.( I went to a concert by the Incredible String Band some years back, and during the interval, bumped into Clive Palmer at the bar, I wanted to mention Shaeffers Jig,but instead asked him for the tuning he used for N/town (is there an accepted alternate title for this tune?), which he told me was Standard C) I shall have fun with this, and thank you again.Tom.
"Banjo Town"/ "Banjotown" is what the ABF has been using.
