Here is a recording of Down South that we did not have in the ORIGINAL RECORDINGS section of the website.

I still think that Fred was the best!

DOWN SOUTH played by Fred Van Eps 1922

Thanks go to our friend Ray Jones for sending this to me.

Thanks Ian and Thanks, Ray.  This is great to hear.

I don't think this is 1922. According to the book "The Banjo On Record", the 1922 recording was with an orchestra and was "probably Van Eps". However there was another Down South recording done in 1918 for Medallion and Emerson Records. It's a banjo-accordion duet by Van Eps and Dan Boudini. As what we are hearing on this recording is strings  and bellows I think this is either the 1918 recording or another Van Eps duet with an accordion that "The Banjo On Record" missed.

Thanks for posting Ian. I enjoyed listening, as two often-ridiculed instruments did a fine job together and sounded great.

Unfortunately many people might say, "Banjo and accordion  .  .  . really ? What happened to the bagpipes?"

Thank you gentlemen!

How could I have missed the characteristic wheezing of the squeeze box???  I assumed it was my lungs in the background.

The database has been updated.
