I imagine there are one or two MuseScore users here? I've just moved to it from Sibelius, after losing the computer my version was was housed on. I've just downloaded MuseScore 3.5, and naturally have a few basic questions.

I'm writing out some A-system pieces which might eventually be put in to C-system plus tab. At the moment I'm okay with inputting notes and timing, and also ornaments and slurs. It's all looking okay. I managed to change the tuning of the Standard Banjo to eAEG#B, but don't know how to save that as an alternative banjo choice for future scores. Plus, when I copy and paste the treble clef dots into the tab stave, it appears an octave higher - an open string is the 12th fret, for instance.

So, how do I save the tuning as an alternative for future use, and how do I get the tab down an octave?

I tried temporarily lowering the treble clef notes an octave, copying that and pasting into the tab, but it still comes out at the higher octave.

I'm sure there will be many tips and tricks for banjo (with or without tab) typesetting with Musecore, so maybe you could include some of that here?

With thanks,

Rob

Ech. I really dislike having the note flags above the score in the tab. My preference is to set all flags to down or at least match that of the original notation. I tend to do that esp. if there are voices used in the score.

The only reason I use the octave indication is when I want to produce a midi output file...I find for editing, my ears often find mistakes my eyes skip over. I don't make a conscious effort to change it one way or the other once I've finished.

I try not to revise notational standards set by the original typesetter...unless they're simply so whacko that it makes too much of a mess. It really doesn't matter as I'm going to be playing from the tab anyway...but I like to keep the notation looking as much like the original as possible.

Right, here's my first presentable score. Constructive criticism always welcome. Let's not discuss here the rights and wrongs of tab.

Thanks, Marc. I'm afraid I always have the rhythm siglia above the tab. It's been that way since the late 15th century, and I see no reason to change it. Sorry, friend!

I've now typeset six pieces, and really feel I've got to grips with it. No more expensive Sibelius for me!

I'm a geek! I love learning the nomenclature "rhythm siglia"...thank you!

15th cent banjo tab...wow! ;-)

Don't modern publishers require the tab siglia to be down? For me, having the flags down helps me with the snap and slur text (which I like above the tab). The cool thing is that it is just a button push to flip the flags. Easy peasy.

Musescore is really just another learning curve. No different than any other program, I found that the deeper I got, the deeper it got. Almost all of my notational/tab needs are covered by it in some form or fashion.

I have found that Musescore likes to build scores/tab in a certain way. Sometimes getting operations out of order can cause you to have to almost totally reset everything.

Okay, here's one that has me scratching my head...

In the tab section, I cannot get the slur to start at the top note of the chord. Any attempts to move it result in something worse. The Help file is not helpful in this regard, at least not with my search terms. Any ideas?

I think the siglia is preventing the slur position. It will not allow the two to overlap. Because the software is totally modifiable, you may discover a method to shorten the stem length and/or move them out of the way...but I have no idea just how one would do that.

Personally, I would just flip the siglia for that section. However, you might ask the Musescore forum folks. There are superusers there who probably can sort it out and show you how to make it work. I have had a lot of trouble figuring stuff out from the help file. The search function has been mostly useless for me.

Cheers, Marc. I'll follow it up.

Um, I was able to make it work. I didn't do anything special, I simply clicked on the slur and hit X, which flips it from bottom to top.

Of course, I didn't do any setup (like octave, etc.). I simply keyed in the banjo tab directly and then highlighted the first note I wanted to slur and hit S, then hit X to flip it from bottom to top. Actually, I was surprised it worked!

Ah, easy! Thank you!

But now I can't decide which works best:

or

All the other slurs are below the fret numbers...

Looks best like this... ;-)

I might add an "HO" and "PO" to indicate a hammer-on / pull-off combo

I am just having a bit of fun. You do what you do...and it will be brilliant.

Hmm, it does. Dang (as all Americans say).

LOL. Guilty as charged, dagnabbit! We watched too many Warner Bros cartoons as kids.
