Keeping the service as it now is costs $500 per annum. That's not a lot of money per person. If TEN of us pledge four dollars and twenty cents per month we have it covered. That's all it is. Not even three quid. Less than a fiver in USA. Come on! We can all do this IF we all do this.

I posted this message as a reply to the discussion on this topic but no matter how many times I re-entered it, NING posts my reply as one letter, the letter C. That was not a cryptic coded reply. That was ning malfunctioning.

I agree with Jody, but £3 per month is £36 per annum and that may seem a bit steep to lurkers or passersby.
I personally think it is a bargain with all the advice, scores, videos MP3 (and even midis) and abuse that people post.
It's as much as £36 per annum if ONLY ten of us chip in. If twenty people pay in it's half that. $25USD per annum which would be no more than £18 per annum.

If 15 people contribute it's about £22 per annum (about $33 USD). But if 30 people pay in it's only $16.67 which is not much more than £11 per annum.

Whichever plan we decide (or Carl decides) to go with, I think we should endeavor to get the full year's fees to Carl by the 20th of July. That will ease his administrative burden and he won't have to do any "fundraising" if a month's fees are falling short for some reason.

As for which plan to choose, I'll go with consensus. But I have to say I don't see a lot of benefit to the $500/annum plan ... We get to keep the mp3 players, but not many people seem to be using those anyway. We also get a bit more storage but I'm not sure that's imperative for a small group like this. I'm certainly open to hearing arguments in favor of the "full" plan - and as I said, I'm willing to pony up my share of the money for the $500 plan if that's the one the group wants.

Finally, in effort to commit people to making contributions, I've added a forum post called "Will you donate?" and made it a featured post at the top of the home page.

I suggest that over the next week each person who is willing to contribute add their name to that post so that Carl has a total head and dollar count. We've had several posts in which members have pledged commitments but I think it will help Carl administratively if those commitments are listed in one place. At the end of the week, if we have $500 in commitments, Carl can let people know how much each person needs to donate. This will also (hopefully) avoid any overpayment from happening in which Carl would have to deal with giving money back .

Apologies if I'm stepping on toes or seeming a bit anal about this ... Everything seemed to be a bit scattershot to me and I'm hoping this will streamline things.

Thanks,
Adam
Count me in!
Jody's mathematics is impeccable but perhaps he has not thought it through?...
The point I was making was that £3 a month does not sound much, but £36 for one annual payment does... and getting people to say they will pay is not the same as getting the cash.. If we ONLY get 10 donations then the figures are correct, if fewer they will be more , if more people donate what happens then? Is donation per person reduced or is the cash held so the site can continue if numbers fall off? I can't see people initially donating and then being asked to pay more if people leave!!

What happens to newbies who arrive? Will they be able to post free or asked for donation or kicked off? I can see a potential nightmare on the horizon!

My opinion is that Carl should set a one off requirement of, say, $20- $30 and see what happens. All the cash in from us regulars will, at least, keep the site alive for a year and then he can decide if it is viable.

So far a count (which is almost impossible) only gets to around 10 people promising. Perhaps a better indication will be after Adam's "Will you donate post" has had its replies.
