Edison Record - Fred Van Eps - Darkey's Dream & Darkey's Awakening - Medley of Southern Melodies

I got a USB LP turntable last year, fiddled around with it and couldn't figure out how to use it properly so it sat in a corner. Well the other day I plugged it in, figured it out, and began…Continue

Learning to read ♪♫

Allow me to explain my recent absence of content contribution to this wonderful site for a minute. I know you've all missed my amateurish attempts at banjeau pickin'. :)

I decided to buckle down and kick the tablature habit. It is, indeed, a fine learning tool (I probably wouldn't have started earlier this year if Rob hadn't offered up the tab that he did, thanks Rob!), but as you gents have said before it cripples your repertoire. I'm glad to say I'm trying my darnedest to quell the… Continue

Victor Talking Machine

I just got one of these off of eBay for $149 (MSRP is supposedly $500) it's a replica, I don't know who's making them, but it's a beauty.

I'm enjoying it immensely! I only have purchased one 78 record so far, of the great Vess L. Ossman (Yankee Land & Peter Piper banjo solos) & it did come with one with some unremarkable orchestra tunes on it.

Here are some recordings I did of the record.

enjoy!…

My Mystery Banjo needs a new head.

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if you all in your great experience could help out a banjo newbie like myself in procuring a new banjo head for this fine instrument I got from eBay a while back. I don't remember what the auctioneer said about it, sadly it has been more than 60 days and I can't find any record of it. I want to say he said it was a Sears Roebuck from early 1900. I don't know.

Since the head was torn I decided I would take it apart piece by piece, clean it up and… Continue

My Banjo

I reckon' I'll do a little show and tell session. I'm very happy with my banjo. I recently got it off of eBay from a man in Florida who couldn't keep it any longer because he was retiring and going to live in a boat in the Caribean Sea. He said he got it while in The Bahamas from an old friend of his who said he got the banjo from a calypso musician in Nassau by the name Alphonso "Blind Blake" Higgs I assume after or sometime just before he died in 1986. The banjo was missing the 5th string… Continue

You will love Clarke's book. It has a wide variety of pieces spanning the gamut of Classic fingerstyle banjo, from 1865 to 1918 or so. I still use it all the time. Free free to post any questions you have about it.

Hi Tyler!
Nice to hear from you!
I started learning scruggs style, then went on to clawhammer and about a week ago I found out about classic style and are now practicing all three techniques.
I find it hard to choose only one way of playing, I'm greedy and want to learn them all.
Nice banjo you got there by the way! I'm still playing on a cheap beginners one, but am starting to upgrade it to something nicer soon.
