Dear List,

Several years ago you may recall that I attempted to learn to play Chinese Picnic. I was inspired to learn from the sheet music based on the 1914 recording by the Van Eps Trio found on the Library of Congress jukebox: http://www.loc.gov/jukebox/recordings/detail/id/3805/ (with a great percussion part). I don't, however have the part for the other piece played with it, entitled "Oriental Dance" as found on this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L3MANmpL4I (with a snappy piano accompaniment). I'm working on transcribing "Oriental Dance," but am wondering if anyone has the music for it. Basically, I don't want to have to transcribe the part if I don't have to do it. If you have the music, would you share it with me?

Thank you,

Greg

I have never found OD or a hint of it anywhere. Van Eps published the sheet music to "Chinese Picnic" but there is no mention of OD. You can download a copy of Van Eps' CP sheet music from Hal's site (I can't remember if Hal has the piano part...but I have it buried in my stacks somewhere). I have it tabbed out if anyone wants it.

I think you're going to have to transcribe OD. If you do, I hope you will share it with us!

Better late than never!

So, I got a lead yesterday from Eli that this may be in Herbert's "Wonderland."  I tracked down the score here http://imslp.org/wiki/Wonderland_(Herbert,_Victor) and found the piece on page 113 in the "Ball Room Scene."  I've attached those pages here.

Now, if only I had the skills and experience like Steve or Shawn to turn this into banjo music to go with FVE's Chinese Picnic… (hint, hint)

Here is the best I could do.  It is fairly close and I feel pretty good about it as it is my first arrangement from piano score/ear.

Had to make a correction, please see attached.

Very nice, thanks Joel!

Hi John, forget this one. I put it together from the piano score and FVE is not playing this. Greg has been working with me on it and we will have a pretty solid arrangement when done. Eli wants to put it in the five stringer.

Yes Marc, both banjo and piano part are on my website.Fred Van Eps Solos
