Hi Alan, I can't find Flora waltz, could you post the sheet music?

Normally a cross indicates a thumb stroke. A d tied to an open b probably indicates a "snap" (i.e. a "pull-off"). So in the absence of a visible score my best guess is that this is one stroke on the B string made  with the right thumb with one of the left hand fingers (probably ring finger) on fret 3,  followed by the finger pulling off to the open B.  I cannot find a "Flora Waltze" on Hal's website. Was it in one of the tutor reproductions?  If so please tell us which one.

cheers , Jody and Mike ,its in turners banjo dance album number 8, by Herbert j Ellis. I think i know where your coming from regards .Alan

So glad to see someone actually using these old books. I sent them to Hal some years ago.

The note you're referring to is called a "grace note", it is sort of a really quick "intro" to the actual note. Technically, it takes just a smidgen of time from the note it is attached to, in this case the B.

thanks Trapdoor ,got it . kick in just before the beat .

Oh, the LOWER D !   that's not a cross or + .  That's a slash through the stem indicating a grace note that has no time value. Look again, you'll see.

Hi Alan,

Did you ever research video cameras?? Or are you already sitting there with one staring at you with its menacing red eye :-)

I believe the correct musical term for "Grace note" is appoggiatura, and is as others describe. Simplistically, it makes the main note sound:  BrrrING  as the appoggiatura note  sounds fractionally before the main note.
