Bridges

I just tried some new configurations of bridges. My Farland now has a Deering bridge. My Clifford Essex currently has a Bridge that was custom for the Farland. I don't know what I like more. The custom bridge is really good. Creates a nice, bright sound that wouldn't be possible on the Farland due to the lack of a tone ring. I'm just not sure what I'm doing right now, and whether I'm going to stick with this configuration or not. Maybe I'm worrying too much. I can't decide what I like more the low action of the Clifford Essex bridge or the punchiness of this custom bridge. Has anyone ever gone through this indecisiveness?

Hi Austin, I've always made my own bridges, usually out of maple, and over the years I've experimented with different thicknesses and designs until I've found the one that suits a particular banjo. Very much a case of trial and error. I also make and fit Weaver style 'floating' tail pieces to all my banjo's and the combination of bridge and tail piece has produced some good results. As with anything to do with sound, it's very subjective..Steve.
