There is what appears to be a Clifford Essex Professional pot on UK Ebay

…BUT what are those brackets inside???  I have not seen any like that before on a CE.

Also, What is that slot in the side of the hoop and I wonder where the neck went?

…  poor banjo!

It looks as though a tone ring had been fitted at some stage as there are witness marks around the circumference of the velum. I have seen a similar set up fitted to a Windsor banjo I once owned. Not sure what the slot on the underside of the hoop would have been used for, as any type of rest could have been fitted to the brackets. Could there have been a mechanical mute/volume enhancer once fitted and operated with a lever resting on the knee?

Yes I agree Mike... but why on earth do it?  I guess that they must have also cannibalised another instrument to ruin this one.

Such a shame.

Here ' s  inspector Dalmasso from the  FBI   ( French Banjo Investigator )

i think this pot is the same that the one here :

same number of brackets / same screws and number of screws for the ventilated tone ring

the banjo is a tenor ; we could think the ebay ' orphan pot has been one , too  ; explanation for the slot ( mute type B& D )

Well spotted Marc!

We learn something new every  day!    I had never heard of Barnes Brothers either.. obviously a CE distributor.

Hey Inspector Marc Clouseau,

The investigation continues:

The CE tenor that you found at www.banjoworld.de    was made by Barnes Bros... NOT CE

According to the BMG Mag  Aug 1971  "Banjo Makers" :

The Barnes Bros. were very talented, I think that they made all of the CE 'Professional' model banjos, which I do not like personally, the hoop is too deep and produces a very 'boomy' tone. The strange thing is that these 'Professional' banjos have the four sided tension hook nuts as found on Weaver banjos - perhaps they made these for Weaver and then decided to start making entire banjos themselves?
