Welcome Luka,

I have been away from the computer for a few days and will be for the next few days too as we have family staying here for the New Year.

It is a shame but one in Scotland is, I believe, now no more. Rob Mackillop who is an excellent musician ran the Scottish Early Ragtime Orchestra and the Scottish Banjo Quartet until a few months ago. Do a search for "Scottish" on the video page on our site.  I hope that other people can suggest other banjo orchestras. I know that David Wade plays at the Baildon Banjo Club in Yorkshire here in the UK, but the website is currently not working.

You were looking for Classic Banjo recordings. I would recommend buying William J Ball CD that are available from here:  http://www.williamjball.co.uk/page10.html

Also site member Rob Murch is a superb player and has CDs available:

The "Acoustic Recordings of the banjo" CD is excellent and contains a large number of original recordings and is worth every penny:

Hal Allert's www.classicbanjo.com site also has recordings for sale

A Google search by artist often brings up downloadable early tracks from University or National Archives.

Is there any particular track that you are looking for ?

Ian

Hi Ian
I didn't know about these CDs - thanks. Is there a list of such resources on the website?
Trevor

Hi Trevor,

William Ball's recordings are essential. Get all 4! I would get those first.

I have everything from the Classic Banjo store and there's nothing I wouldn't recommend. I especially like the Charles Mansell recordings as well as the Torrances recording.

Luka,

If you like Banjo Orchestras, be sure to check out the Banjo Orchestras podcast by Hal: http://blog.classicbanjo.com/

The Heftone orchestra is entirely comprised of Brian Hefferan playing all of the parts. His recordings are highly enjoyable and he's an amazing ukelele player, but he plays banjo-ukes on all of the tracks (I believe).

Have Fun!
Dave

Thanks Dave for all this information. I'll look into it

Thanks Everybody

I bought 2 of the Wiliam Ball CDs a coupleof weeks ago and just received the Rob Murch CD in today's post.  They are all fabulous! Many thanks for the recommendations.  I'll be buying some more soon.
