Being from the South, the original USS Kearsarge has a storied history. In the American Civil War, it was deployed to intercept and eliminate the most successful Confederate raider, the CSS Alabama, which had wreaked havoc among the US merchant fleets for several years. The Kearsarge sank the Alabama off Cherbourg in a now legendary battle...her crew earning 17 Medals of Honor.
The USS Kearsarge was wrecked in 1894 off of Nicaragua, thus, this march dedicated to her memory.
There is another USS Kearsarge March but it is modern.
