Jean-Marie van de Laar posted recently asking about the way to proceed with his practice when learning Classic Style. Several people suggested that playing a full solo should be the next step and "The Jovial Huntsman" was suggested as a suitable piece. I have spent some time to produce a short lesson so that anyone who wants to play this great, but reasonably easy, solo can follow the score and watch the fingers!  Sorry I can't show both hands, but the score is fairly well marked for the right hand.

I will move it to the LESSONS page soon but I can't at the moment as the software is being modified and it won't allow me to fiddle with it yet!!

Ian you must be psychic.  I have just started working on this piece!  I had some questions on the RH markings but I think I found the answer in Joe Morley's tutor which I also found on this site.  But jsut in case, can you tell me what the right hand techniaue is for the chords in the 4th line of the score?  JM describes the marking as a "pinch".  Can you elaborate?

Many thanks

Trevor

Apologies for the terrible typos!

Spooky eh Trevor  !!!!

A pinch, in this case, is where the thumb hits the 3rd string, the first finger the 2nd string and the second finger the 1st string. All the notes of the chord are played at the same moment by "pinching" the fingers and thumb together.

Thank you, Ian! Very good stuff there. Yet another JM piece I have messed about with in the past but never really took on as a project.

Might have to now!

Great job! This is an excellent solo for beginners as it's easy but very effective. Probably the first "simple" piece I took on (after months of playing stuff that was way over my head)

Slightly off topic here but are those photographs of Charlie Cairoli in the background?
