I like the feel you impart to this tune, Marc. It grooves just right.

This is one of my favorite tunes.
I didn't know it was it was an old tune. I got my version from a tutor (The Banjo And How To Play It) by Emile Grimshaw from 1962, and Vess Ossman was mentioned as composer. Ossman lived 1861 - 1923 (?) so it is reasonable that he may be the composer back in the 19th century.

Jan,

"Sunflower Dance" is credited to Herman Rowland and is actually from the 1880's. Last year (?) the ABF newsletter had a short treatise on the history of the tune (which was originally titled "With The Tide Shottiche") and included some precursor tunes from earlier banjo tutors. I like it because it is a fun tune and not so complex as to put off even beginning players. I've taught it to several Bluegrass folk. I also find it interesting that virtually every time I play it, someone comes up to me and says they recognise it...though it hasn't had a mass-media recording since 1905!
