When Rob Murch called in a couple of weeks a go he played a snatch of a solo that I didn’t immediately recognize. I really liked the tune which was  “Joy Dance” composed by Alfred Kirby. An Ernest Jones recording had recently been uploaded to the site and I should have recognized it!

It looks quite easy on the score, but I have found it quite a struggle as it contains a fist full of single string triple runs, and these ARE a struggle for me!

Anyway, here is my attempt. More practice is required, so please excuse the odd hiccup, but it is a great solo.

I have added the score to the MUSIC LIBRARY. If anyone would like the piano midi or MP3 please let me know.

Yes, that's a great solo! I love Kirby's compositions, they're deceptively simple, with some tricky bits, but they also make a great use of all of the banjo's capabilities, including a very good use of the bass string which is often lacking in some solos.

Thanks for posting this, I needed me some Kirby Joy Dance after the rough day I've had!

Very nice, Ian. Well done! Seems like Kirby loved chord-melody...neat tune. I'll put it on the TAB list!

Hey Rob, I told you it was a struggle for an old bloke  :-)

Marc Dalmasso commented that the changes in tempo in the midi accompaniment can cause problems. I know what he means! I knew the tempo was about to change but just before it did my fingers tied in knots every time and I ended up chasing the darn piano :-)

Midi files are almost as malicious as the evil Metronome from hell... they both need to be banned !!

Thanks for playing the piece. You made it look so easy !!!

Marc, my recording of Joy Dance was based on that by Ernest Jones posted a few weeks ago. Jones makes dramatic use of tempo change throughout the piece. I don't think that he had a metronome!  It certainly wouldn't have helped me. They are hateful devices!

For those who missed the recording listen hear to see how the speed changes throughout :
