At A Georgia Camp Meeting Sinclair Winans

1897 Song by Kerry Mills. Dan Sinclair (lead) and Bob Winans (second), around 1984. In the early '80s I was doing a lot of research at libraries in NYC, and Dan offered to let me stay at his sculpture studio. In return, each evening I had to play second parts for his solos. After a while, we decided it would be fun to record some of our efforts. The only recording equipment at hand was a cheap boom-box, so there is a bit of distortion. Herewith, the first installment from “The Sinclair-Winans Tapes.”

I think that this is a great tune. I have not heard it before... does anyone have the score that they would be prepared to post of email me please?

I think the only Kerry Mills piece that I know of is Whistling Rufus, but this one is leaps and bounds better and I would love to have a go at playing it.

Many thanks

Easy peasy, Ian. If nobody posts you a copy by this evening, I'm sure I have the dots.

Thank you Marc.. You never cease to amaze me!

Your offer is very much appreciated. I don't know how I have missed this piece over the years.

Well, I was worried there for a little bit. I couldn't find it on my PC. So, I started to dig thru the archives and found the original Kerry Mills banjo arrangement from 1897...and scanned it for you. I think I have one or two other Kerry Mills pieces (IIRC, "Rastus On Parade") in hardcopy. My Kerry Mills "holy grail" would be an original banjo arrangement of "Redwing"...just so I could play it for the unwashed multitude of OT banjoists who think it is "traditional". ;-) Amazingly enough, "Georgia Campmeeting" also made it into the OT "tradition".

That is brilliant Marc!
I appreciate the PDF. This is what makes this group such a great place, people will help others with nothing more than a smile.

I am struggling through plenty of other pieces at the moment so "Georgia camp Meeting" is now in my "Pieces to Practise" Binder :-)

All the best from the UK

So...I sit down to dinner tonight with "Georgia Camp Meeting" looping in my head (because I've been busy tabbing it out). Halfway thru my sandwich I think, why is this tune sound so familiar?

Sandwich gone...it hits me. Over the holiday weekend (July 4th...something about some argument we had with George III, way back when), I had watched one of my favorite movies: "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942), with James Cagney playing George M. Cohan. In pastiche of roles, the Cohan family is shown playing vaudeville. In one quick sequence they're shown in blackface, dancing with tambourines to...wait for it..."At A Georgia Campmeeting"!

Whew, glad that little mystery was solved! ;-)
