Converse 1886

Re: the Analytical Banjo Method of 1886, is this (the fingerstyle section) material considered early Classic, or is it just not really a part of this genre? Would somebody please share a brief history of the change from "E" tuning and reading to "G". I know I could do it, but I am looking uphill when I think of learning to read in yet another clef.

Luscomb entry to Classic Banjo

Today I should get my hands on a Luscomb. I am sharing restoration repair fees with the owner in exchange for letting me borrow it for a while. It has nylgut strings and a skin head. I'll post a few pictures and put up some videos, and I will appreciate comments and directions from you hardened veterans. I'll be open to repertoire suggestions, as I start with overflow from my fretless material. Thanks in advance.

Charles Mansell Plays Emile Grimshaw

Hello Everyone. I am proud to announce another two CDs available on the Classic Banjo Shopping site. http://shop.classicbanjo.com. I have restored two CDs of Charles Mansell playing his favorite Emile Grimshaw solos. I particularly like these two because you can actually hear Mr. Mansell playing the second parts to these songs. He actually played second banjo on all of his work but the quality has been so poor that those parts never stood out.…

Classic Banjo Podcast

Hello Friends. After quite a bit of time, I am proud to announce a new podcast on my blog site. This offering is about Charlie Rogers who, some say, was second only to Vess Ossman in banjo playing. I hope you will listen to this podcast and the 3 songs that Charlie plays during the program.

old tunes _ new life

Extraordinary ; when you open U_Tube , they say " warning , don  ' t put on UTube songs   if you don 't have the permission .

With our old tunes , no problem , in France at least , the tune become " free " or " public domain after 70 years .

I will add a new "' old "song  ( the 5th , i guess ) from the attic , exactly from an old  ' magazine .   It just need some transcription  from the piano  to our favorite ' instrument .

Clifford Essex datation & Sr-number

I found an interest in the last Marc ' post where he spoke about the factory ' period of his beautiful CE special clad ' banjo ; about 1934 , i can remember .

For sure , it is my own point of view , i discovered by myself that the CE ' serial numbers ( when there is one on the banjo ) are not CE ' brand serial numbers but CE ' models serial numbers ; i hope you will understand what i mean .

For instance , i have a pre 1920 clipper model ( dowel say CE- Co grafton street ) and…

American Banjo: Three-finger and Scruggs style

I bought the book this week. Mel Bay, 2007.

I was hoping for some history and comparisons of the various styles, but it turned out to be a collection of tablature, transcribed by Steve Garner, from the album Mike Seeger  recorded for Smithsonian Folkways in 1956. The text is limited to a two  page introduction.

As tablature, of course, you have to tune your…

About Japan concert

Hi Carl !

Yes touring was so interessting, we don't like big towns, we prefer to go to visit country and traditionals spots, Japan is about 60% not occupied, it is deep "sugi" forests (sugi are Cryptomeria, a kind of little sequoia trees), and bamboos everywhere, and mountains in center of this country... we 've visited Japan many times since 1998, i am saling lutes and early instruments to many japanese lute teatchers. I've never sold banjos in Japan. I am also playing koto music, and… Continue

My banjo stolen

My Cammeyer Vibrante Royal zither banjo did not make it home after a Secret Life Of Banjos concert in Berkeley, California last night. It was in a brown hard English case, the kind that is straight on one side and round on the other, odd looking. It must have been taken during the packing up of the car outside the venue. The case has a name (now forgotten) and the Canadian address of a former owner hand written on the outside. If anyone sees the banjo or has information please let me know. I am… Continue
