Joe Morley at Salisbury 1916
Two rare photographs of Joe Morley taken by Val Edwards, outside the entertainment hut at the 5th Training Battalion. A.I.F. Company, Salisbury,1916. Joe was marooned at the camp by an unexpected blizzard and had only his evening dress with him, the banjo is the Weaver banjo, which belonged to Charlie Bramley, and was recently advertised for sale by Pat Doyle.

Interesting. The 5th Battalion, AIF transferred from Egypt January-March 1916 to France...straight into the Somme. I suppose they had some sort of intermediate stop at training quarters in Salisbury.

Amazing and fortunate, that we have a military historian at our service. Very interesting to know that the story which came with the photographs does not seem to have got lost/mixed up along the way, thanks for the information.

LOL. Blame Google. I have always been interested in military history...and since my grandfather was "over there", I've done a good bit of research on WWI. We're really fortunate that the web is awash in historical information. I very quickly found the 5th Battalion, AIF has a website with all battles fought, etc. They're proud of their history...and well they should be!
I often wonder if Old Joe did any serenading of the troops in hospital. My grandfather was gassed late in the war and spent nearly a year convalescing somewhere. I like to think he might have been tapping his feet to a sparkling tune from the "lightning banjoist" at some point.
