I would be very interested what set-up members use for shooting the videos on the site.

Eg model of camera, any special equipment etc?

How do you monitor what it looks like? Do you  angle the camera's viewfinder screen so you can see it or plug into a laptop and display on its screen?  Do you use the camera's microphone or have a separate mike.

I might get around to filming myself when I can play the thing so any advice would be very welcome.

Many thanks

All of my videos have been made using the camera imbedded in my laptop computer. I simply swivel the computer around to get the best shot. I do use a seperate microphone, a Logitech USB mic. Post-processing is done via the video program that came with Windows Vista. Point, click, drag, drop, etc.

It is very simple...has to be, I'm a vidiot. I have a nice video camera and have yet to figure out how to use it for this stuff.

I have a Canon HF10 digital video recorder. It records to its internal memory or to a SD card that you can insert.  I assume that most digital videos will do what the HF10 does.

It has a viewfinder screen that you can twizzle round to face you when making a recording, so it is easy to see what you are filming. It is clever too as it inverts the image as you spin the screen over to face the front.

It has a remote control, so you can start and stop recording for the 1000 "takes" when making a video for on here  ;-)

It links to my iMac with a USB lead and the supplied MAC iMovie software recognises the camera and copies the recordings across for editing within iMovie.   Then simply export as a quicktime .mov  file and upload to Youtube.

Two things though.

1) The inbuilt microphone is not the best and makes my playing sound even more clunkety than it actually is. I have bought a Zoom H2 digital recorder, which makes the banjo sound much better, but I have not yet worked out how to edit out the old audio and add the new to the video !

2) When making or editing a recording ensure that you set the screen ratio to 4:3  not  16:9

Youtube and the Ning site prefer 4:3 ratio and display full size in the view window.

Good luck

Thank you, gentlemen!

On my early videos , i used  a  Sony camera ( .mpeg ) and i have a zoom Q3  ( regular  not HD) for almost 2 years ; ( .mov ) ; very good sound & it feature 2 input gains , i choose "low " when i play with the piano or CE ' banjos , " high " with a  Stewart.. ; But i think you can use any camera from any brand prererably ; it ' s gonna work because the instrument is fabulous ; I never edit the sound ; reverb =zero ; nothing is worse that a banjo with a reverb ( like do Rob , he knows i hate ) EQ  : straight ahead ; same thing in live with a steel string banjo .

Sometimes , i can put a mirror behind to see what i do ; i just cut the starting & the end of the videos ,  because  there is not remote control on  the Q3 .

Many thanks, Marc.
