A Site Dedicated to all enthusiasts of Classic Style Banjo
I have a few 1890s Washburns that are missing some of the original "Imperial" nuts. These things are completely unobtainable,so a friend of mine who is a good backyard engineer and I decided to have a go at making some. I described this process in detail on Banjohangout, but thought i would mention it here to encourage anyone who is missing that vital and elusive part-anything that was made by humans CAN be remade! Also,to see what people think.
The next step is to try and recreate the 4 piece bracket shoes,a much harder task.

Let me know if you have anything for the later Washburn, and we'll talk. I'm sure we can work something out. Your work looks wonderful!
I went through my stash, and didnt find anything to match yours, its a really odd nut.
I will keep looking though, i do have a friend who has a batch of odd stuff.
I think the nut, somewhat damaged, is still usable. I have a ton of old banjo parts and can't find one hook that fits it. The owner could probably be persuaded to relinquish one of the other remaining good hooks so I can get a better measurement on it. He only lives a couple of hours away. The banjo is otherwise in superb condition and is the love of his life.
i would make a new hook, then tap out the original nut to match the new thread.
easiest way around it i reckon.
I have been working to restore an old Washburn 1025 (no markings) that belonged to my great grandfather. Among other things it is missing 5 of the original "imperial" bracket nuts. I found this thread doing research on line. Do you still have any of the ones that you made?
I am also looking for one of the beaded ivoroid tuning pegs. Any ideas?
Do yoiu of anyone making these complete with hooks and shoes? Thanks.....Bill Benton
