Pursuant to all this recent Ossmania, I thought I’d post a contribution to the various arrangements of “St. Louis Rag” — this one by Ossman and Hunter, which doesn’t appear to be in the site’s music library. (Ian, I sure hope you’ve been feeling better since your Christmas inclemency; I’m including a B&W pdf here as well if you’d like to add it to the site’s library.) I also thought the Magee imprimatur would be of interest to all involved; Chris, thanks for all your insightful comments about the Dixie Medley/Turkey in the Straw Medley recordings.

Again, Benjamin, many thanks for so generously contributing these great photos with the group here.

Warmest of wishes,

Chris W.

Thanks for shareing this stuff Benjamin! I also would find scans of any Ossman manuscript very interesting.

Chris, this looks Lila a good arrangement. I don't think I have any arrangement of this one, can't wait to work through it. Thanks!

Thank you for this, Chris!

Benjamin, here is a covershot of the Peek issue with Carol on the cover...this is a 1940 issue and has some charicatures of Hitler inside, so it's an earlier issue than I originally thought.

If you are interested, here is the link to buy it:

I had an issue of this from your family's storage locker sale back in 2001 or so as I mentioned earlier, but it was in very bad condition...this one looks nice.

Note the comments about Carol in the opera in St. Louis on the bottom right corner.....

Benjamin-Also, on one of Marc/Trapdoor2's blog entries on this site, he has a scan of the 1910 Census page that has Vess's census listing, which of course includes address, occupation ("musician"), and living immediate family.....

Here is the direct link to his blog entry with the link to the Vess 1910 Census page.....

There is so much more to share with you, Benjamin, and perhaps others here have helped you along in your quest.....things like articles by Jim Walsh from the early '50's, the late 1800's Frank Converse (another conetmporary banjoist of Vess's) book with a chapter devoted to his thoughts and experiences with/about Vess, etc.....

I'll try to help you with as many things as I know about to help you learn about Vess.....
