Just made this this morning -- following Sylvia's suggestion, I had the idea of writing a midi with the piano part and playing to that. The midi turned out OK-ish (there are a few mistakes to iron out) but I'm playing slower than usual, at about 90 BPM, due to the difficulty of playing along with the midi piano.

Please forgive the mistakes, I got lost at one point towards the end and I only took about three or four takes. I did include some outtakes, though, about how a rogue cat managed to sabotage one of those takes. Enjoy!

The "Mike Moss Minstrels" are coming on well. What's next?   ... Sousaphone?

Lynn and I really like this Mike. It has the all  fun that should be part of banjo playing!  I think your cat has been talking to our cat. Ours always wants to come and sit on my knee for a stroke when I am playing. I believe that it has worked out that banjo playing and stroking the cat are mutually exclusive!

Thank you so much for such an entertaining video.

ps. Great playing too, and... Put the cat out first next time :-)

Cheers Ian and Lynn! I'm working on the piano part for Circus Parade right now, and I hope to record it soonish... funny I didn't think about making MIDIs of the piano parts before! I'll upload them later on if you like, but they do have some mistakes as they were made rather hastily.

There you go Mike. That was brilliant and you don't have to stop at piano.  Love the cat.

Thanks Sylvia. Of course, if would have been even better if it had been the cat playing the piano (or the piano playing the cat -- how weird is that?!?). I think Mother Nature told the cat to stop my playing, something along the lines of "And yea, I say unto you, go unto Mike Moss and interrupt his playing, for he grateth mine ears"

I don't think Mother Nature had anything to do with it ,  the cat was just being a typical cat.... I mean that's what cats do. If you had told me that your cat was going to be in the same room when you were videoing, I would have put a bet on , that she would have walked in front of the camera, and tried to shake your arm, oh , and was also purring like mad the whole time :)

True! Another interesting fact is that cats tend to stay asleep until they sense that a camera is being switched on, that's when they know it's time to go into "attention demanding" mode :-)

Very good & very good idea ( the midi to practice )

Not just for practice, eventually add 2 or 3 more tracks and you have a group with Mike as the lead.Yes ?  Mike, or anyone else who may have the time to experiment.

Thank you for the kind comments, Michael and Marc.

You know, Sylvia, that could be great -- an internet banjo orchestra of sorts. We could all record tracks, and with one bound, we were free (from the shackles of time and location). Of course, the use of a metronome would be mandatory, or else we'd probably get something like this:

We could then post the video here and on BHO, and gloat over our achievements. What's not to like?

I could take care of the unpleasant bits, such as editing the video, syncing the tracks, even writing MIDI parts if necessary.

and the possiblities are endless.....it was done not so long ago on the internet, Virtual Choir , I think it was called...... However I was thinking more on the lines of" backing tracks "to play along to, with more that just one instrument. And am actually in the process of looking around for software to do just that.   Love the Jeeves clip. Reminds me of me, only I am usually the one coming in last at the post.
