"In this group I regard the "Cornish Dances" already mentioned as the composer’s highest achievement - and I think Cammeyer did too. We both played them often - but not publicly, as far as I can remember.

Of the "Dances" Cammeyer said more than once, "I know I’ve gone ‘way above their heads this time but, anyway, they don’t tread on anybody’s toes." - the second part of his remark meaning that this work owed nothing to any other composer."

-- Bernard Sheaff

When I travelled back in time to meed Alfred, I also recored the following (apocryphal) conversation:

"When I finished listening, I wondered at the richness and variety of dynamics and expression in Cammeyer's music, and asked him whether or not he wanted me to notate it on the score.

"I would have done so myself if I wanted," he replied. "I shall keep it unwritten, so that if the love of banjoists for my music ever disappears, so shall the knowledge which makes its beauty."

I said, "the banjo is under your will only."

Cammeyer smiled and told me that I had become a Minister of Truth."

For those who don't believe Mike's unlikely story that the King of Cornwall fell over his feet, while dancing a romp, and slipped into a puddle and drowned ....

I have posted the score for "The Romp", Cammeyer's Cornish Dance No2 in the MUSIC LIBRARY.

You try it, but keep clear of the water's edge.

The 'Cornish Dance No 1', 'Danse Bizarre', 'Down Devon Way', 'Marche en Passant' and 'Bolero' are probably the best of Cammeyer's output, there are also one or two more obscure pieces I vaguely remember, 'Meditation' was one which comes to mind. These are true duets, rather than a banjo solo with accompaniment. Well played Mike.

Hi Richard,

thank you Richard, I'm glad you liked it. I agree, the 2nd banjo or piano parts are a must for these pieces... I had originally made a MIDI version of the piano score, but I found that it was far too robotic to allow for expressive playing of the 1st part, so I left it out.

The other pieces you named are also great... Cammeyer's "Bolero" is probably one of the best pieces written for Classic banjo, in my opinion. I tried to learn how to play it but the rapid runs up the neck always give me a hard time.
