The 2nd banjo (backup) part for Circus Parade, by Joe Morley. Feel free to use it in your own performances or recordings.

I have been working a lot on my 2nd banjo playing, mainly by learning all the main chords for accompaniments in the Morley tutor, and thanks to the advice from Jody Stecher I am now capable of sight-reading easy 2nd parts.

This was shot in one take and sight-read throughout, without rehearsing, whilst listening to the original.

Please forgive the silly faces and bum notes as sight-reading, listening and playing all at once isn't easy! (For me, at least)

How do you and other folks find time to learn and record all this stuff?   I am so far behind ;-{

I should have started years ago :-)

Hey Trevor,

Nil desperandum  !

What you need to do is to learn to play some easy pieces. The techniques involved will set you up for the future and inspire you to learn more. I am just putting together a video lesson for  Sunflower Dance. This is a great tune and easy to play  (apart from a couple of fiddly bits). I am marking every finger, left and right hand and marking every chord to show where it is on the fingerboard.. and also it has a TAB stave... so wait a while and it will be online.

You must be aware that it is COMPULSORY for every Classic Style player to learn to play Sunflower Dance  !!!!!   ;-)

Excellent Ian - I have been having a look at Sunflower Dance (downloaded from the archive) as well, so you video would be very useful - if only to see how it should sound!  You are definitely reading my mind :-)  I am making some progress but it's slow.  Still I enjoy it which is the main thing.

NB Does Mike have a twin who wears a suit and a Fedora?

Hi Trevor,

the trick to playing 2nd parts is to know the 1st part very well, and to simply sight-read the 2nd... it's not all that difficult if you learn the accompaniment chords in the different keys from the Morley tutor. It's one of the "boring" bits we often overlook but it's actually very useful.

Unfortunately I have a legion of twins from back when I intended to create a Minstrel troupe composed entirely of Mike Moss clones. It didn't turn out well, and now there is a legion of Mikes on the loose, looting and pillaging and playing the banjo while doing so. Not a pretty sight.

Hi Mike

Playing the 2nd part is probably good practice for learning the chords.  In my experience you can only learn chords by using them.  I have downloaded the Morley tutor so I'll have a look.

Thanks

Trevor
