Baritone Banjo

I've been reading about the Goldtone ML-1 baritone banjo. Something completely new to me. Has anyone used this instrument for classic banjo playing and with nylon strings ? Thanks. Dave Continue

I'm looking for sheet of music of Alfred Cammeyer published in tablature if at all possible. Does anyone know if tablature versions of "All Alone" and "Albumblatt" exist anywhere ? Many thanks. Dave Continue

Cello Banjos Today

Dear All. As noted in my previous post, I play a modern 5-string Goldtone Cello banjo which I have arbitrarily tuned to E and absolutely love it. The 14 inch head gives the instrument a loud and…Continue

Life of Nylon Strings

One of my favourite banjos is a 5-string Goldtone cello banjo tuned down to E. I'm getting ready to change the nylon strings on this banjo, but have to admit these strings have been on the instrument…Continue

"Gold Tone is a weird company.  They kind of get close to the mark, but not quite.   Take, for example, your "cello banjo".  The basis for this was a tenor banjo cello, or a tenor banjo pitched one octave below the…"

"Hi Joel.  Thanks for your reply - much appreciated.  I own a couple of very nice Clifford Essex banjos that are of course superb for classic banjo playing. I also play a 5-string Goldtone cello banjo arbitrarily tuned to E which…"

"I have to admit that when these came out I just kind of ignored them, dismissing them as a novelty.  This post had me go read the description.  According to Gold Tone copy, it is "tuned" one octave below the 5th fret of a regular…"

"Many thanks.  I'm very happy to buy the tablature sheet music if it exists anywhere. I used to buy mine from Clifford Essex but can only find material on Ebay these days which doesn't include these two pieces. If there are books or…"

"Sorry, a bit late to the dance. You might check with Rob MacKillop. He's played both on Youtube and it is possible he published them in one of his books. Alternatively, Clifford Essex music has many titles still available. I have tab for both…"

"Hi Marc, Joel.  Thank you both for responses to my question on the cello banjo. At the other end of the scale is the so-called Giraffe banjo or banjorette that seems to have been a novelty instrument with a very small [5 inch ?] head. Again I…"

"The Gold Tone cello banjo is not exactly what they represent it to be.  It is really a tenor banjo with a 5th string added. By "tenor banjo" I mean it based on a Gibson tenor cello banjo (one octave below the tenor banjo).  This…"

"Originals are fairly rare...they were never built in large numbers. I was told there are only around a dozen Stewart CBs known to still exist. Part of the problem is that they're typically relegated to playing simple bass lines..no solos.…"
