This is the type of bridge that I make. It's based on a bridge design seen on a Windsor banjo some years ago. It's made from maple and having the transverse central leg allows the bridge to made as thin as is needed without the bridge falling over. I've experimented with various thicknesses and have found that about 2mm gives a good sharp tone on most of my banjos.
