For anyone else struggling with Farland's variations on My Old Kentucky Home, I just noticed that Fred Bacon, in his Medley of Southern Airs, plays the 1st variation (theme) and 3rd variation (Allegro/rolling variation) as per A A F's arrangement almost note for note. Considering that Fred was his pupil, we can fairly assume that this recording is the closest we can get to what the original sounded like, esp. when playing fingerstyle (the Carnival in Venice recording was a bit of a letdown due to the plec. technique).
