Temlett Zither Banjo

Does anyone know if or how I can date my Temlett banjo that I've recently acquired? It has a number: 3824 stamped on it.
Any help appreciated as I'm new to this, but I plan on learning to play.

hi John,

There were two Temlets, father and son- this looks pretty much like Dad's work with the MOP around the rim.

We've no dating information per se but I think this probably mid 1890's if that helps.

Looks to be in nice condition - strongly recommend Clifford Essex zither-banjo strings.

 Funnily enough I ordered a set of Clifford Essex strings yesterday.

It does seem to be in pretty good condition, but could do with some tlc as its been in storage for around 50 years. Can you recommend any treatment or polish for the wood?

Interesting question John, over the years I 've tried most of the proprietry brands of guitar polish and come down to blast of Mr Sheen on an old duster -never seems to cause any problems....bit of Silvo on the metal parts - nice and gentle!

We, in the north, use mutton fat for most things, including polishing our banjos, it has wonderful waterproofing qualities, and holds a high polish,can pong a bit, but who cares?

Beef dripping would work with a little salt....

Vegetarian or not, 3 out of 4 doctors advise against eating banjos, even those polished with the purest vegetable oil.
