I am sure you will agree that it was worth the wait!

These two tracks are a bit of a puzzle as they may be named incorrectly on the album, so over to you to give me the correct titles and composers please.

 

The first was named “Chinese Picnic” on the recording track, but it clearly isn’t that.  Anyone got any ideas?

No matter what it is called it certainly is some great playing!

 

This second track has been titled “La Premiere”  by Paul Eno.  Again this may not be correct.

I may possibly give a prize for the correct answers…. or maybe not!   “-)

Remember that Fred Van Eps was almost 80 years old when these recordings were made, so a few more years and I will be as good as he was.

The 'Chinese Picnic' was arranged by Parke Hunter who called it 'Jolly Chinee' it is the same tune as the recording. I seem to remember that the ABF published a piece called the 'Chinese Picnic' but I don't know/can't remember/going ga ga, whether that is this piece or another tune.

'La Premiere' was written by Paul Eno, my copy was in A notation but has disappeared from my collection, so I cannot throw any more light on this one, at present, it has lot in common with Glenside March and Marche Impromptu, by the same composer.

I made an arrangement of the 'Indian Summer' which I think, also appears on this record, the I S is a pretty tune written by Chas. Daniels, and has a Red Indian feel to it. I haven't played this record for some years, so thanks for making it available once again without the need to get the gramophone out.

I like the new layout on the website it is easier to read and move about, a lot of work I am sure, well done, and thank you for your efforts, much appreciated.

So who composed Chinese Picnic?  I don't have a copy of the Parke Hunter arrangement, do you Richard?

It is a long time since I had the 'Jolly Chinee' out of the cupboard,I will scan it for you, it may have been written by St.George (not of dragon fame) but I am not certain, I think the  version you have came from the van Eps book of solos published by Smith in 1923. The ABF members will be able to tell all.

Richard has sent me the score for Parke Hunter's  "Jolly Chinee", and sure enough this is what Fred Van Eps is playing.

Thank you Richard for retrieving that score, and thank you Ian for posting it. When I think of the time it would have taken to put right the incorrect title at the time I acquired this record in the early 90s, before the Internet! Now thanks to this site the riddle has been solved in just one day and the score made available for everyone to share. In a way NOW is the best time ever for classic banjo...
