If you listen to the Fred Van Eps version of Daly's reel in the JUKEBOX and look at Steve Harrison's arrangement you will wonder how Fred managed to get all the notes in. I do in every recording from him. He was a Maestro of the banjo and must have had more fingers than normal folk :-)

Again the answer is staring you in the face, if listening to van Eps depresses you, stop listening to him. van Eps was a good banjo player, no doubt, but he got to play like he did by playing the same tunes over and over for the cylinder recordings he made. He also really thought about everything to do with making playing the banjo more efficient and hence, easier - the flush frets for one thing and then his banjo strings were incredibly light - the third string was about as thick as a normal banjo first string.
