Some of you might remember Richard Yates, the classical guitarist, and his brief sojourn on our site during which he produced some very fine transcriptions of Frank Lawes pieces for his favoured instrument. Mr Yates had joined our site to gather information to produce an article for the Guitar Foundation of America's quarterly magazine, Soundboard, in which he writes a series of articles called The Transcriber's Art.

The article he has produced is a great tribute to Classic Banjo and, especially, for one of its most brilliant composers, Frank Lawes. It contains an introductory history on Classic Banjo, some thoughts and comments on transcribing for guitar, and the scores and tablatures for his arrangements of "Got a Happy Feelin'" and "Cute an' Catchy" You can download the PDF file below to read the article:

The Transcriber's Art - Frank Lawes

Having helped Richard Yates as far as I could, I am very glad to see that he has produced such an excellent article -- not only will it provide enjoyment to guitarists, but it also gives some much-needed publicity and recognition to Classic style banjo and the works of Frank Lawes.
