Tiny house makes room for giant banjo

Published on Tuesday 17 May 2011

A MAN has become the proud owner of the world’s biggest banjo which he plays in one of the country’s smallest inhabited houses.

Richard Ineson, 64, bought the 5ft tall instrument, which measures 26.5 inches across its drum, last month and has been trying to get to grips with it ever since. He has had to make room for the 100-year-old banjo in his tiny four-room house which measures just eight feet across and 16 feet deep.

The grandfather-of-three, who lives alone in Whitby, has had his eye on the instrument, made by Clifford Essex, for years and was delighted to receive a call last month offering it to him.

Mr Ineson, a retired butcher, said: “I have been playing the banjo for 50 years and by doing that you get talking to people at clubs and meetings and I heard about this banjo.

“It was owned by a man down in Reading but there was no chance of him parting with it.

“It was only last month that I received a call from his wife telling me that he had passed away and asking if I wanted to buy it.

“I don’t think she really wanted to part with it originally because of the sentimental value but it was just sitting, unused, so she decided it was time to sell it on.

“It was actually in very good working order when I drove down to pick it up.
