I was just looking through "Banjo Method - Correct Elements of Playing" by W.J. Stent. It's available on Mr. Hooks's fabulous Internet Archive page. It's not the easiest tutor book to follow, the text is all handwritten.... It covers fingerstyle and plectrum style playing and encourages the student to practice some exercises with both styles.
On page 20 there are a couple of exercises in "Sixths", played on the 4th and 3rd strings or the 3rd and 1st strings.
Beneath the exercises there is a footnote saying -
"Play lower notes with plectrum, upper notes with second finger."
In the world of guitar playing, pick and fingers, or "hybrid picking" is not uncommon. Ironically, it's frequently used by guitar players to imitate banjo players rolls. In the banjo playing world, however, I don't recall any mention of it at all and don't remember it being mentioned in any of the other banjo tutor books I've read, which begs the questions...
1. Does anyone know of any other tutor books that mention the pick and fingers method of playing?
2. Does anyone know of any famous players who may have used this style?
3. Anyone know of any recordings that use this technique?
I seem to remember reading of a Tarrant Bailey Jr. record titled something like "Fingers and Picks" and wondered if that involved pick and fingers playing, however, I have been unable to find a copy, so who knows??
I bet any style of playing would have been a piece of cake to him!!
4. Or was it such an obvious way for a plectrum player to play a note on say the 3rd string and one on the 1st string, at the same time, without hitting the 2nd string, that it was never mentioned?
Except by Mr. Stent...
Thanks, Bob
