Does anyone know about the  black horizontal rectangles crossing the heads of most of the displayed banjos? What are they? Why are they there?

They are labels with model designation.  Click on the “full view” and you can see them.

Hey Jody, 

I think that they must be some form of  early "subliminal" advertising... only "special" people can see them. 

I can't see a thing, but I have always thought that I was nothing special. 

You and Joel must be the chosen few ;-)

Thanks Joel. Sure enough, it;'s as you say. In the small version of the photo it looks like gigantic slices of black electrical tape.

It is a great photo and very cool to see that vendor booths have not changed much at all.
