Heck, it sounds good to me Carrie, well done! Doesnt seem too easy at all to get that timing down, I'm an ear player too like Jody once was...I'd have a heck of a time with that tune! Anyways..bravo bravo!

What kind of banjo is that your picking? I like it.

Yes indeed it sounds good, just not the particular good that is on the page. The timing of the first measure is easy, once one knows what it is. It is simply the same rhythm of what is sometimes (mistakenly) taught as the basic clawhammer/frailing rhythm "bum-ditty", and this is followed by "bum-a ditty.

1 – 3 4, 1 2 3 4.

Long short short/ short short short short.

Take the 2 names Joe Morley and  Emil Grimshaw. The way the first name is said is *not* as 3. Joe, Mor, and Ley are not equal length. Joe is long and the next two syllables are each half the length of Joe. Joe  —Morley.  Each of the four syllables of Emil Grimshaw are the same length.

E, Mil, Grim, Shaw.

The entire first measure goes Joe Morley Emil Grimshaw. And there you have it. If stateside banjoists are preferred then it goes Vess Ossman, Shirley Spaulding.

Thanks for your helpful comments on the timing, Jody.  I am trying to get to grips with reading music notation (rather than playing by ear) so this is helping.

Thanks, Dow - I am playing a Clifford Essex banjo ('CE Special').  It has an 11" spunover rim 3" deep and has a surprisingly big sound - I really like it.
