Larking's Banjo Budget #1. An early Joe Morley composition. It prefigures some aspects of "melodic" banjo technique as well as the The Ballad of Davy Crocket...

Nice to hear this Morley rarity, once more, well played Jody. A Miss Larking is mentioned as playing piano accompaniments at various banjo concerts, so I assume that she had some connection with the mysterious 'Larking's Banjo Budget' of which this piece seems to be the only representative of what was probably intended to be rival to the dominant 'Turner Banjo Budget'. Mention of Davy Crocket reminds me of the early 1950s when the 'Ballad of Davy Crocket' was very popular and we all got our mothers to make us a fur hat, complete with tail, mine was made from sheepskin, formerly my brother's flying jacket from when he was in the RAF, the rest of this jacket went to make a furry dog for my sister.
Richard, I had a Jen You Wine Davy Crockett coonskin hat when I was 8 years old. It had a detachable tail which connected to the hat by means of a metal snap. Probably not just like Davy's. I was allowed by the authorities to wear this to school. Me and so many others. You might remember the last line of verse 3 was "killed him a baar when he was only 3". My mother overheard a five year old singing "killled in a bar when he was only 3". that's tough living! My mom and I both thought that was really funny.
Thanks for the Larking information.
Wow - awesome playing Jody, complete with banjo tricks! It's a very catchy tune - in fact, I have just pressed play again...
Thanks, Carrie. With your bluegrass technique you could play this one easily. With the exception of the diminished chord in the third part, the left hand is dead simple on this one. All the movement is in the right hand.
now with 5 stars , Jody
Nice bass twang .Great playing Jody . How many banjos do you have .
