Ernest, have you tried a Nylgut third on your banjo? Bluegrass is little outside the scope of this site.

I second Dave's motion. Nylgut thirds are terrific on most zither-banjos. They are very firm, not floppy and not wide. They "push back" as a steel string would but they sound ever so much better. Their presence along with an appropriate wound bass string makes the three light steel wires sound better. Without the player even touching the third string, the 3 higher light gauge steel strings *sing* with a synthetic or gut string giving off helpful overtones. With a steel third the higher strings will go "Clang".
