This is what Joe morley was playing by December 1895 when Essex put him on at one of his London banjo concerts. Joe was playing a six stringed fretted Weaver banjo which had been give n to him by Essex, who said, "I explained to him that I could not possibly put him up before a London audience with a seven stringed, smooth arm banjo, Joe protested that he could not cope with a five-string instrument so we compromised by my having a six stringed banjo made for him".
