Ernest Jones was the banjo playing Birmingham Turf Accountant who made some very nice records on his Vibrante, amongst them 'Heather Bloom' 'Mighty America' and this one, 'Swanee Echoes' written by Alfred Kirby. Ernest Jones had a mosaic floor in the hall of his house, which featured a Vibrante Zither Banjo, it is still in situ, but not available for public inspection, Jones later moved to Herstmonceaux near Bournemouth, where he remained active in the local musical circles. Most of Kirby's solos remain unpublished, but he was a gifted composer for the banjo and it is a matter of regret that perhaps, his best work will never be played again. Swanee Echoes is a challenging solo which you will enjoy.

Hi Richard,

I must have missed this post when I was away from the computer in January. Thanks for posting it. I will put it into the MUSIC LIBRARY soon.

Can anyone please tell me how the piece should be played?… no not how to move your fingers up and down, but the order in which the score’s sections are to be played!

On page 1 there is a Segno at Bar 9,

At the 2nd time bar the repeated section on page 2 there is  DS al Fine (which means back to the Segno at Bar 9 then to the Fine)

The Fine is shown at the end of the top of Page 2

Thus half of the second page 2 and all of page 3 are not played !!!  :-)

Does anyone own a recording or can explain the order that it should be played?

I definitely think that you should play all of it, just go straight through, play each bit once - there are far too many repeats in banjo music in any case, but play the last bit, the Swanee River bit, twice to finish. It's a good workout. There used to be recording of it on Neovox. I've got  a spare 78 if you want to buy one the next time our paths might cross, also I would sell you my Joe Morley 78 of the Jovial Huntsman if you still want one.

Yes Richard, it seemed such a waste of all those dots on pages 2 and 3 not to at least play a few of them!  I guess that it proves that a lot of the banjo music was published in haste with little thought of proof reading.

It looks quite a struggle for a banjo duffer, like me, but I will have a go at it. I may be slow but I will get there in the end… perhaps!

This is a piano version of what it should eventually sound like:
