This is the first artefact I have seen from Clifford Essex's Royal Pierrots - I have researched their work for years and myself run the last-remaining professional seaside Pierrot troupe - "The Pierrotters". Where is the trunk located and could I come and see it some day? Do you know if any other artefacts remain of the original troupe? Many thanks for your help in this.

I don't know of any other remains of the troupe, I bought this many years ago from a lady who had some connection with CR, but I cannot remember what the connection was - she asked me not to publicise the fact that I had bought trunk from her, but I suppose that she will have passed on by now.

 

There is a photograph of the 'Original Pierrots' which I have posted on this website, also, odd bits of banjo, and vocal music, bear the legend 'As played by the Clifford Essex Royal Pierrots' otherwise, nothing of which I am aware.

 

I did see your troupe on the television one time, you looked the part.

 

I divide my time between Whitby and Scarborough, if you are coming this way let me know, you are welcome to have a look at the trunk.

Thanks, Richard - I'd love to see it when I'm next up there (I am performing in a show about Dan Leno at the Stephen Joseph Theatre on 13th June, so maybe we could meet then?) I wonder why the lady felt awkward about the sale - was she embarrassed at the pierrot connection, do you think?

The Pierrotters do not have the banjo-playing skills or style of CE's troupe - we are closer to the al fresco minstrels and Waterloo Pierrots from up your way!

June looks o.k. let me know when you are available nearer the time. I've no idea about the motives of the previous owner of the trunk, in wanting our transanction keeping confidential but I don't think that it was anything to do with pierrots. I used to advertise for banjo memorabilia and she replied to one of my advertisements with this trunk, which I was pleased to be able to purchase.
